Asian Handicap Betting — The Complete Guide
Asian handicap (AH) is the most popular betting market in Asian sports betting. By eliminating the draw and using goal handicaps, AH offers better value and more strategic betting opportunities than traditional 1X2 markets.
What Is Asian Handicap?
Asian handicap betting gives one team a virtual advantage or disadvantage before kick-off. This effectively eliminates the draw, reducing outcomes from three to two. If the handicap results in a tie, your stake is refunded (push).

Types of Asian Handicap
| Handicap | Type | Draw Possible? | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Level ball (Draw No Bet) | Push (refund) | Team must win |
| -0.5 | Half goal | No | Team must win |
| -0.25 | Quarter goal | Half-push | Split: half on 0, half on -0.5 |
| -0.75 | Quarter goal | Half-push | Split: half on -0.5, half on -1 |
| -1 | Whole goal | Push (refund) | Team must win by 2+ |
| -1.5 | Half goal | No | Team must win by 2+ |
Asian Handicap Examples
Example 1: Manchester City -1.5 vs Arsenal
If you bet on Man City -1.5, they need to win by 2 or more goals. A 2-0 win pays out. A 1-0 win loses. There is no push since 0.5 handicaps have clean outcomes.
Example 2: Liverpool -0.75 vs Everton
Your stake is split into two equal bets: -0.5 and -1.0. If Liverpool wins by exactly 1 goal (e.g. 1-0), the -0.5 bet wins but the -1.0 bet pushes (refund). You get a partial win. If Liverpool wins by 2+ goals, both bets win. If it's a draw, both lose.
Asian Handicap Betting Strategy
- Compare lines across bookmakers — a -0.75 at one book might be -0.5 at another, giving you a better entry point
- Watch for dropping odds — AH line movements often signal insider information or sharp money
- Use sharp bookmaker lines as benchmark — Pinnacle's AH line is the market reference; if soft books differ, there may be value
- Track closing line value — if you consistently beat Pinnacle's closing AH line, you have a long-term edge
