Asian Handicap Explained โ A Step-by-Step Guide
New to asian handicap? This guide explains every AH type from scratch โ level ball, half goals, quarter goals, and whole goals โ with clear examples and payout breakdowns.
How Asian Handicap Works
In a standard 1X2 bet, you have three outcomes: home win, draw, away win. The bookmaker charges a margin on all three. Asian handicap removes the draw by applying a goal handicap, leaving just two outcomes. This means:
- Lower bookmaker margins (better odds for you)
- Refund (push) instead of losing on a draw
- More strategic betting options (choose your risk level)
AH 0 โ Level Ball (Draw No Bet)
No handicap applied. If the match is a draw, your bet is refunded.
Example: Barcelona 0 vs Real Madrid @ 1.85
- Barcelona wins โ You win (โฌ100 ร 1.85 = โฌ185)
- Draw โ Push (โฌ100 refunded)
- Real Madrid wins โ You lose (โฌ100)
AH -0.5 โ Half Goal Handicap
Your team starts -0.5 goals behind. They must win. No push possible.
Example: Liverpool -0.5 vs Chelsea @ 1.90
- Liverpool wins โ You win
- Draw โ You lose (Liverpool is -0.5, so draw = loss)
- Chelsea wins โ You lose
AH -0.25 โ Quarter Goal Handicap
This is a split bet: half your stake goes on 0 (level ball) and half on -0.5. This is the key concept that confuses beginners.
Example: Arsenal -0.25 vs Spurs @ 1.95 (โฌ100 stake)
- Arsenal wins โ Both halves win (โฌ100 ร 1.95 = โฌ195)
- Draw โ Half push, half lose (โฌ50 refund + โฌ50 lost = โฌ50 returned)
- Spurs win โ Both halves lose (โฌ0)
AH -0.75 โ Three-Quarter Goal Handicap
Split bet: half on -0.5 and half on -1.0. Your team needs to win for any return.
Example: Bayern -0.75 vs Dortmund @ 1.87 (โฌ100 stake)
- Bayern wins by 2+ โ Both halves win (โฌ187)
- Bayern wins by 1 โ Half wins, half pushes (-0.5 wins, -1.0 refund)
- Draw or Dortmund wins โ Both halves lose
AH -1.0 โ Whole Goal Handicap
Your team starts 1 goal behind. Win by 2+ = win. Win by 1 = push. Draw or lose = loss.
AH -1.5, -2.0, -2.5 ... โ Higher Handicaps
The same logic scales up. -1.5 means your team must win by 2+. -2.0 means win by 3+ (win by 2 = push). Higher handicaps offer better odds but require bigger winning margins.
Positive Handicaps (+0.5, +1, +1.5)
When your team has a positive handicap, they start with a virtual lead. +0.5 means your team can draw or win. +1 means they can lose by 1 and push, or draw/win. Positive handicaps are safer bets with lower odds.
Asian Handicap Calculator
To calculate asian handicap payouts, use these rules:
- Half lines (-0.5, -1.5): simple win/lose โ multiply stake by odds or lose it
- Whole lines (0, -1, -2): win/push/lose โ push refunds your stake
- Quarter lines (-0.25, -0.75): split in half โ each half follows the rule above
